The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed a rule to standardize electronic signatures and health care attachment transactions, such as medical charts and x-rays. If finalized, the rule would also standardize notes documenting physician referrals and office and telehealth visits. The rule would apply to entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, including health care clearinghouses, plans, and professionals “who electronically transmit any health information in connection with transactions for which [the Department of Health and Human Services] has adopted standards.”
